Getting Real

So I had another real experience today…photoshoot for the IMP. I worked with Lily and I’ll get to see the pictures tomorrow. I’m so excited! I think they’re going to be cool. We did some straight product shots and some cooler arty shots…her specialty. I brought my creativity and did some shots of my hands holding the straps. My hands are SO veiny…from the weight lifting.

Anyway, in starting this business I’m getting good at spending money, but as I told my dad today after the hospice nurse left, “It’s time for me to get good at making money.” He responded, “They go well together.”  Yeah.

My goal is to have the site launched on Saturday. Dad spiked another fever after having a great day so we’ll see, but as I told the hospice social worker what I learned from him is mostly to “keep it moving” no matter what. I did it through heartbreak in grad school and I’ll keep it going now. I’ll grieve when the time comes, but not yet. Alive is alive until it ain’t. And we’re all alive right now.

Photos…getting the pictures taken and talking to my dad about it was exciting for him. He’s SOOOOO supportive and loves me so much and wants me to succeed it is a true blessing. I’m lucky. Now I need to continue to fulfill his wishes for me. Will share pictures tomorrow!

Love,

Alissa

Eye roll…lip turn

I’m known for my eye rolling. People comment on it. I am not sure where it comes from, but my dad says I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. I also have been known to turn my lip in disgust.

For some reason as I drove through my town today through the middle class neighborhoods, past the middle class homes I had a lip turning. I looked at the homes and turned my lip.

Now I grew up middle class. There’s nothing wrong with it. Comfortable. The American dream right?

I appreciate it for what it is, but at the same time it disgusts me. For me. I want more. I want to get the rewards of my own hard work…beyond middle class. My parents raised me to have more. Unacceptable to have champagne tastes with beer money. No good.

I know life gives you what you ask of it and I am asking for more than the American basics. More. Starting a minute ago.

So I’m going out as an entrepreneur. On my own. With my ideas and making them manifest. You should too. Will you?

Alissa

p.s. Looks like a few more weeks with my dad. I’ll be on as much as I can here, but with him mostly.

Small Business is not pretty

I’m pretty much going this alone right now. My darling partner in crime/cousin is supportive but not too helpful in terms of actually getting things done right now. She’s in a growth period and is doing what she needs to do, but I need her to do what I need her to do! LOL. Not happening right now, but it will…I think.

Anyway, I too am facing some ish. I think my dad is dying. How do we know if someone is dying?  Aren’t we all dying all the time? Or not until we’re actually dead? I guess it’s a matter of perspective. I think I’ll choose just dead…otherwise this is living! I’m his caretaker so it is an immediate situation. Tough. Emotional. Draining. Occupying. He suffers and I don’t like it. For now we’re just loving each other as much as we can every moment.

My darling PIC dealt with this last year with her mom and what she describes is not pretty. Not what I want for him at all. Gotta make the doctors understand that he needs to be comfortable…number 1 and number 100. That’s it. Fighting Fighting Fighting and torturning him is not cool.

What’s all this to do with business? Everything. Because real people who run small businesses (and large ones too) are real people. With real ish in their lives that can interfere with the plans. I want to talk to the printer, arrange for the photos, order the balsa wood, get the envelopes, arrange for USPS pickup, add web content, buy a new domain name and point it at this one I don’t like much, package product, make videos, etc. All that. But reality slowsssssss down the process. Honestly I’d just like to sell some product so I could tell my dad and perhaps he could either get better or let go because he will see I’m on my way to freedom.

p.s. you can see the site evolve before the launch at www.impgarden.com IMP–what you do with your earbuds…when they’re not in your ears.

Sorry 3dcart.com

OK OK you do have tutorials, but they’re hard to find. Now I will read 100 manuals and get how to use your site. So far so good. Don’t hide the help people…make that ish obvious.

This website SUCKS!

Well I’m putting together an online store using 3dcart.com. 3dcart seems like a fine company so I don’t have any specific complaints about them or what they offer. But I am annoyed by the difficulty there seems to be attached to creating any webstore. I think they all make it somewhat challenging in order to keep the designers and their help lines in business. Probably smart for business but fucking annoying when you say “easy to use”. Not fricking exactly.

Anyway it is getting there. It will be ready by October 31.

I found a pair of sister photographers to do real photography to replace the “shots” I took. Oh you can go look at it…go buy something if you want at www.impgarden.com.

A soft launch is probably a good idea to get me used to shipping product and such and to see if the ordering software works. Do me a favor. Go over there and buy an IMP — What you do with your earbuds when they’re not in your ears. Let me know what you think.

Confidence…boing, boing

So I have my product. I have chosen a webstore server. I’m adding content daily. I’m praying. I’m visualizing. I’m feeling confident. I’m getting good feedback from people who I can talk about the idea with now that I have a patent number. People are excited! They love the idea. I shared it with my business banker the other day and she got all WOOWOO!

I brought her one today and she was into it. She liked it and was like all appreciative of me bringing her by a couple. But she wasn’t all WOOWOO! LOL. I asked her how much she’d pay for it and she said, well a pair of earbuds cost like what $10? So I’d pay half that, maybe a little less for the smaller one. What she said TOTALLY makes sense (now that I have looked at it again…we were thinking $10/each) but my confidence got a kick in the nuts…if it had nuts that is.

Damn! And it’s funny because I said to her, “No matter what you say about the price I won’t be offended.” Ummm. LIAR! LOL.

But it was useful on a couple of fronts. Made me immediately go back and rebuild my confidence. If something small like that, someone who likes my product and gave honest feedback, is gonna shake me, this is going to be a long and bumpy ride. I won’t get anywhere with that attitude! Anyway, built up my confidence again, then looked at pricing again and it actually makes sense. I may package them in pairs of two (will get more out and get me closer to my desired price point without cutting into revenues too much…was the original plan long ago). Made me think more on this branding issue. Useful. Make me keep my grip on this thang. A good thing.

Cheers! And keep up your confidence for you thang!

Business is one thing

So I am in business…or will be very shortly. To me business is one thing, but figuring out you can be in business, or be an inventor, or a hairstylist, or whatever you dream is is the important thing here.

I, as noted in earlier blogs, have been fulfilled through the traditional things–school, career, family, motherhood. A pretty straight path (with a few wild careenings off path from time to time), but overall fairly straightforward. My dad likes to brag to his friends, “She did it in the right order–School, Job, Husband, THEN kid.”

I’m glad he’s pleased. But am I? Sure. Sorta.

While my mom always encouraged me to be a Renaissance woman (thus my corporate name Da Vinci FML, LLC–get it? Renaissance woman? haha, clever) she is also super conservative, talking to me now as an adult about being careful about the job (I am, I am…I do my job to the highest standards only) and wondering mostly why my friends and I are so unsatisfied and why we want something of our own. “When I worked, I just did what I had to and got my paycheck. I didn’t think about being happy.”

Sorry mommy, that’s not gonna get it for this Renaissance chick. I need more. Something of my own. And I’ve got it/am getting it.

The thing to know is that you can have what you want, get what you want, be who you want…if you want to.

Much love,

Alissa

We’ve got product…up in here

Well my boxes of product from Chi-to-the-na are here! What!? What?! They came yesterday to my surprise. I thought they would be in stuck in Shanghi for the 9 day statuatory holiday, but I guess DHL doesn’t rest even on holidays.

When I happened to check the tracking ticket yesterday and it said, In New Jersey With Courier for Delivery I almost had a stroke! I sprinted through the office of my job-job to my friend who is also working on her own stuff and burst in on her with the news. It is EXCITING!

I had to wait to get home to see them and I called my husband and instructed him NOT to open the packages for me. He said he wouldn’t. When I got home there they were in the garage…one biggish box and one smallish box, 4000 pieces.

We took pictures of the box opening process and held up the wrapped packets grinning. Me, my son, my dad and hubs. I said to my dad, “It was in my head and now it’s in my hands!” Amazing. Think it into being..right?!

Anyway I didn’t roll around naked in them, but I am determined to build a website by the end of the month to begin marketing these puppies.

And also coolness…today I got my patent pending number. I’m all ready to go.

Christian L. here I come.

Much love,

Alissa

Kick off

Did I tell you the story of how this whole process got started…at least this accelerated stage from idea to product in hand?

I had been working on this idea for a while. Nearly 2 years. And when you see its simple beauty and functionality you’ll be like, that took you 2 years to perfect?

LOL. Yes damnit! It took two years.

Anyway, I went through design, and coaching, and figuring out correct sizing, placement, construction, etc. Sourced materials, found subcontractors, and all that good ish. Finally I went to http://www.mfg.com to find a manufacturer and found a fantastic one in Shanghi. Linda and Susan you guys ROCK!

They tested and tested and send prototype after prototype to get this right for me. They got it. But then they spoke of LARGE minimums. I was stymied. I didn’t have the cash.

I had cooperated in the bankrupting of our family with my husband in the building of his business. Good lessons from that, but NO cash.

I had an automatic draw from my personal account to an online account and didn’t pay much attention to it. One day I checked it and there was $2000 in there.

I took a chance and wrote to my manufacturers and said, I have $2500 (not quite) and want some product. What can we do for that (and I need it to include shipping from Shanghi to NJ). Bold eh?

Funnily enough they said, no problem. We can give you 4,000 peices of both sizes of the product with one design. GREAT!

I wrote back and asked if I could get both sizes and 2 designs. They hemmed and hawed a bit, but agreed. WHAT!?!?! Obviously it doesn’t hurt to ask right?

Well great, but I still needed $500.

I transferred the money from the online account to my personal account and prayed about the $500. I’m not religious, Buddhist actually, but I believe the universe can hear me when I ask so I asked. I need the money to buy these pieces. I don’t know where it is going to come from but I need it.

I went on to bed. I sat bolt upright at 2am thinking about a refund the garbage company owed me. I got annoyed thinking about it, saying to myself, “I’m going to call them tomorrow to see where the he** my money is!”

It then occured to me that there was an envelope in the kitchen that had been sitting there for about a week from the garbage company that I hadn’t bothered to open. I RAN down the stairs to the kitchen and ripped that sucker open. $587.61! WHAT?!?!?!

Prayers answered. Request fulfilled. It doesn’t hurt to ask, eh?

I sent off the money a couple of weeks ago and the shipment is on its way out of China as we speak, “Waiting to Move” on the carriers website.

LOL.

I love when I plan comes together!

Turn over a glass to mark the day

I am reading Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (it just came in the mail yesterday! Thanks Amazon!). It is funny because I’ve ready or watch videos before on this “secret” stuff and they didn’t make any sense. What secret?! Hello? Am I missing something?

Yes.

I wasn’t ready. I am not sure that I am now, but the book does seem to make a lot of sense to me now. I only am through the first part of it, but I think it is here at a time that makes sense. Finally.

My cousin, Malene, who will also be blogging her journey as well (she claims…we’ll see, she’s not a real public person so it’s a stretch for her). She is my partner in this business and I’m so glad to have her along.

In the Think and Grow Rich book Dr. Hill writes about “turning over a glass” to commemorate the moment when you got “it”. Well all I have handy is my steel water bottle but I turned it right over.

Let’s DO THIS!
